Gada Special Economic Zone (GSEZ) is a new phenomenon in the industrial, trade, investment, and urban development strategies in Oromia National Regional State and Ethiopia at large. Almost three-quarters of Ethiopia’s industrial area is located in Addis Ababa and the surrounding Oromia Special Zone. With the drive to create an industrial economic hub in Africa, GSEZ will play a strategic central role in the industrialization and urbanization development of our nation. As a national and regional priority to power socio-economic prosperity, GSEZ intends to be a pioneer of free trade, export processing, recreational, and smart industrial city by 2063.
As a regional development initiative to create jobs, industrial, trade, and urban foundations, 24,000 hectares (240 km²) of land has been geographically assigned and delimited by Proclamation 226/2012 to establish the GSEZ Authority (GSEZA). Our Economic Zone is working on land acquisition and basic infrastructure development. The operational management of the Special Economic Zone has commenced, and GSEZ has been designated by the Ethiopian Investment Board for the startup phase, covering 3,150 hectares of land. Operations will commence through One-Stop Services (OSS) soon after the designation of the EIC authority. This is part of our mission to ensure Oromia develops a multi-purpose economic zone.
GSEZ in Oromia is committed to incorporating our farmers into a genuine, equitable development strategy and improving the quality of life for our people. The special zone features 13 industrial zones, including a Smart City, operating under distinct rules, laws, and incentives to boost the national economy through foreign direct investment and domestic potential. My government is fully committed to making this plan a reality, addressing every challenge with proactive and responsive strategies to establish a pioneering national economic zone.
